Hickman, Ky.–The Dorena-Hickman Ferry is closed due to high water. The ferry will be shut down for an indefinite period and with the forecast that may be awhile. The ferry could be shut down for as long as 13 days.
Ferry operators said Sunday afternoon the ferry had run as long as it could considering the conditions with the rising Mississippi River. The river forecast calls for a crest at 53 feet by February 18, with possible fall to 50 feet by February 23.
Ferry operators said the ferry normally shuts down when the river gauge at Cairo goes above 40 feet, but they kept operating until a last run this morning when the Cairo reading was 45.4 feet.
In a Facebook post today, ferry operators said, “We have run as long as possible.” Operators will post a notice on Facebook when the ferry is ready to continue operations.
