UC Boys Clinch Regular Season District Title

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Just as they have all season in District 13A, the Union City boys impressively took care of business.

The Golden Tornadoes bounced back from a loss that ended their eight-game winning streak two nights earlier to clinch the 13A regular season championship with a 64-37 rout of Bradford Monday night.

The victory made it a perfect 10-for-10 for UC in district play, which has won each of its league games by double figures. It also locked up a first-round bye into the semifinals of the upcoming postseason tournament for the Twisters, who improved to 18-8 overall.

Additionally, the Purple and Gold has already assured itself of a spot in the regional tourney.

Union City’s girls, meanwhile, still have some work to do after they dropped a 45-34 decision to the Lady Red Devils in Game 1.

The loss dropped the Tornadoes (10-13, 4-6) to fifth place in the district standings behind Bradford, which could host a rematch in a first round district tournament game in two weeks.

The two teams have now split a pair of regular season meetings.

On Friday, UC plays at South Fulton in its final regular season road game of the season.

UC 64, Bradford 37 (B)

The Tornadoes were in control from the opening tip, shaking off a loss to fourth-ranked Columbia Academy on Saturday.

UC led at every quarter break (14-8, 27-15 and 39-25) before officially putting away the host team with a 25-point fourth period.

Ben McMillan posted a game-high 25 points, making half of the Twisters’ six 3-pointers. He also was 8-of-9 from the foul line for a squad that was good on 18-of-23 in all.

Tyler Walton hit the Tornadoes’ other three treys and ended up with 14 markers.

Union City made 19-of-41 field goals in all while limiting Bradford to 14-of-38 – including 2-of-20 from beyond the arc.

The Twisters also outrebounded the Redmen 28-19, and had six less turnovers (18-12) than did Bradford.

Bradford 45, UC 34 (G)

The Lady Tornadoes were tied with Bradford at 27-all entering the fourth quarter, but could not overcome their shooting woes and foul difficulties incurred by leading scorer Jada Williams to get over the hump.

Union City hit just 25 percent of its field goal tries in all and failed to connect on any of its 16 3-point attempts.

Williams scored a game-high 18 points – all in the first three quarters – before fouling out in the final frame.

It was 9-all after one before Bradford took a 21-15 lead into the halftime break.

Shyon Stephens followed Williams on the scoring list with eight points, while both Kendall Davis and Sophie Theobald had four points apiece.
