Benton, Ky.—Today marks a sad anniversary for the people of Marshall County, Kentucky. It’s been one year since a student gunman opened fire at Marshall County High School, killing two students and injuring 21 others.
Bailey Holt and Preston Cope, both 15, were killed in the tragedy.
An appreciation breakfast was held this morning for first responders and school officials alerted parents and students in an email not to be alarmed by the Lifeflight helicopters landing on the school campus. Several of those injured were treated and transported by Lifeflight helicopters a year ago.
The Marshall County FOCUS (Facilitators of Community Unity and Support) group also plans a remembrance service at 6 p.m. tonight at Mike Miller Park in Draffenville. Several Marshall County churches will have hot coffee, tea, hot chocolate and baked goods and all are invited to stop and extend fellowship. 750 orange glow sticks will be passed out to the crowd.
The accused shooter, Gabriel Parker, age 16, is awaiting trial. Meanwhile, families of four of the students shot are suing the school district, saying the school failed to keep their students safe.
