Eighth Grade Night At UC Middle School A Success

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Eighth-grade night at Union City Middle School was everything it was hoped to be.

The Tornado teams swept Trenton, winning the girls’ game 32-17, then the boys’ nightcap 37-16 at Marty Sisco Gymnasium.

The UCMS chorus sang the national anthem before the contests and eighth-grade players and managers were recognized between games.

Union City’s two teams will now begin their postseason play Saturday as they participate in the Blue Suede Invitational at South Gibson County High School.

The Tornado teams both play University School of Jackson, the boys’ contest starting at 2:30, the girls’ at 3:45.

The Lady Tornadoes, who’d beaten Trenton for their first win of the season by one point back in October, were in control from the start in completing a season sweep of the Lady Bears.

UC also evened its record at 9-9 with the triumph.

All five of Amari Bonds’ field goals came from beyond the 3-point circle as she outscored the visitors by herself, 18-17.

Ciera Williams had a fine game with nine points, while Marlee Theobald was good for four points.

Union City led 11-5 after one, 18-7 at the half and 24-15 after three quarters of play.

Those eighth grade girls recognized at halftime of the boys’ game included Bonds, Williams, Adaiysha Snow, Khali Brooks, Arieyanna Cox and Neiel Yisrael.

The Twisters turned in a sterling defensive effort and will carry a 16-4 record into the Medina tourney Saturday.

“To hold them to just four field goals for the entire game speaks volumes about how we played defensively,” UC head coach Andre Coby said afterward.

Union City, which had to rally late to win an earlier game against the Bears, was up 5-1, 17-7 and 26-11 at the quarter breaks while leading wire-to-wire in the rematch.

AJ Blackman was the top scorer for the Purple and Gold with 16 points. Dominic Broadway added eight and DJ Monroe added four.

Those eighth grade boys recognized at halftime of the girls’ game included Broadway, Blackman, Monroe, Jaylen Lewis, Owen Rodgers, Nolan Chandler and DJ Robinson.
