Union City, Tenn.–Students in Sherri Moore’s first-grade enrichment class at Union City Elementary asked a question of “How are bridges built?” recently after reading a story together.
Mrs. Moore then enlisted the help of her son, Will, a 2016 graduate of Union City High School and a current UT Martin civil engineering major, to help explain the process.
Students asked Will which materials would be safer to use when constructing a bridge and he gave a demonstration of the process.
The children then assisted Will in deciding which boards were most sturdy and why, and they also used problem-solving skills to develop support under the bridge.
