Shiver On River Cancelled For This Year

By Shannon McFarlin WENK/WTPR News Director
Buchanan, Tenn.—With the Paris Landing Inn in the process of being demolished, this year’s Shiver on the River event has been cancelled. Shiver on the River has been held on New Year’s Day every year for nine years and has been held in all kinds of weather, from the cold to the bitterly cold.

Paris Mayor Carlton Gerrell, who originated the event, told WENK/WTPR that this year’s event will be cancelled. “We’ve had fewer people taking part in recent years and since we won’t have the Paris Landing Inn this year, we decided to cancel,” he said. “Once the Inn is rebuilt we may start them up again.”

This would have been the 10th year for the event, which was always held at Paris Landing State Park. Paris Landing Inn was an integral part of the event, providing a brunch buffet for participants, not to mention a good place to warm up.

‘Shiver on the River—Freezin’ For A Reason’ was an annual fundraiser for the REAL Hope Youth Center in Paris and Gerrell said REAL Hope is looking for another fundraiser to take its place.

He noted that the public “can always donate to REAL Hope at any time.” REAL Hope is an after-school program which is located in the Central Services Building on Jones Bend Extended in Paris.
