Henry County Approves Contribution Of $5,000 For Historic Fire Engine Return

By Shannon McFarlin WENK/WTPR News Director
Paris, Tenn.—The Henry County Commission unanimously voted Monday evening to give $5,000 toward the restoration and return of the Paris Fire Department’s 1927 American LaFrance Fire Engine to Paris.
The fire engine has been found near Portland, Oregon. The city of Paris owned the engine from 1928 until it was retired and sold to a local buyer in 1960. The engine was used when the Paris Fire Department was located in the former City Hall Building on the south side of the court square in downtown Paris.
Prior to asking for the vote, County Mayor Brent Greer said, “The Paris fire engine is coming home.” Greer noted the city of Paris had given the same amount for the project and that the county possibly will add more later.
Commissioner David Webb—who also is the Henry Co. Historical Society President—said the Society is seeking help from the public and local organizations to return the fire engine to its home and restore it to its original condition.
Webb told WENK/WTPR that the Society has raised $4,445 through its GoFundMe campaign and private donations, too.
The total amount being raised is $31,000.
In other business during the commission meeting:
–The commission appointed Commissioner James Travis and Private Citizen Jamey Tosh to the Henry Co. Medical Center board.
–State Rep. Bruce Griffey of Paris said he and other new state representatives will be sworn in January 8 in Nashville. “This is an honor and a privilege,” Griffey said.
–Commissioners adopted the Henry Co. Emergency Management Operations Plan update and the Multi-Jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plans which are adopted every five years.
–The commission authorized sale of delinquent tax property for $1,250 to Cynthia Gornick. The property is assessed on the maps of the assessor of property as Map 0950, Group K, Control Map o950, Parcel 004.00.
