Hops & Barley Reopens Today After September Fire

By Shannon McFarlin WENK/WTPR News Director
Union City, Tenn.—Hops and Barley Restaurant in Union City reopened today at a new location, just in time for the holiday season.
The old location on S. Ury St. was destroyed by fire in September and the owners, employees and volunteers have been working hard in its reopening, including with benefits for them by community members.
The new Hops and Barley is located at 615 E. Reelfoot in the old Bel-Aire bowling alley, according to Kristy Rider.
Rider said the restaurant has reopened with the same employees, including a couple of new ones. The new restaurant is much bigger, capable of serving 40 more people, she said.
Patrons will find most of the same favorites on the menu, with some new specialties being served. “When the fire happened, we had just put out a new menu and had only used it for two days,” Rider said, “so we’re using that menu”.
Among new items is a chicken gravy bowl, which features homemade mashed potatoes topped with fried boneless chicken, house made brown gravy, yellow corn and shredded cheese. “I just tried that yesterday and it’s delicious,” Rider said.
The menu features seafood, pasta dishes, burgers, sandwiches, and a long list of appetizers including loaded gravy fries, fried asparagus, fried pickles and fried mushrooms.
Rider said, “We’re really excited to be re-opening. We’ve been working to get everything ready before the holidays.”
