By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–A photo and a few words paid off well for several 8th grade students at Union City Middle School.

Five young people in Renee Hempel’s advanced English class were awarded cash prizes for their efforts after participating in a “Photo Voice” contest recently held by the Obion County Prevention Coalition.

The activity – funded by donations from several area banks and co-sponsored by the Obion County Health Department – was part of Red Ribbon Week observed by all Obion County Schools.

Red Ribbon Week is a national campaign to create awareness in students of the drug abuse problem that rising in our society.

As part of Red Ribbon Week activities, students were asked to take a photo, then write a narrative to describe that picture and how it represents their thoughts of how a life of drugs can ruin one’s life or how a life apart from drugs can be successful.

UCMS 8th grader Kate Crabtree claimed first place and $50, while Nolan Chandler was a close second and received $25 from Carla Aaron, coordinator of the OCYPL, and Obion County Health Department coordinator Catherine Sedergren.

Chloe Meade received a third-prize of $15 and both Emma Powell and Reagan Durkee each earned $10 with fourth-place entries.

Mrs. Hempel also benefitted from her class’s participation as she was allowed to submit a wish list for her classroom to organizers beforehand.

Among those items on Hempel’s wish list, which she was presented by Ms. Aaron and Mrs. Sedergren at Wednesday’s awards announcement, were several Webster dictionaries, numerous binders, a portfolio, gift cards and a handful of other classroom supplies.
