McKenzie Police Issue Warning To Drivers Who Pass School Buses

McKenzie, Tenn.—The McKenzie Police Department is reminding everyone that its officers will be taking action against motorists who pass school buses when the buses have their lights flashing and stop signs extended.
In a press release, the police department said it has been brought to their attention that drivers have been passing school buses when children are exiting the bus and the signals are on.
“Recently in Indiana three children were killed and a fourth seriously injured when a vehicle failed to stop when a bus was letting children off. These children who died were twin six year old boys, and their nine year old sister. We cannot imagine the tragedy that family and community are feeling right now. Please do not allow this to happen in our community,” department officials said.
McKenzie Police Officers are watching the school buses to stop people who fail to comply with this state law, they said. “Not only are officers watching for this traffic infraction, the buses are equipped with cameras that show the vehicles that are committing these infractions. Failure to stop when a bus has its stop sign extended and lights flashing is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by a fine of no less than $250 and no more than $1,000.”
“Please stop when you see a school bus with its stop sign extended and lights flashing. Those children are our future and we need to keep them safe,” they said.
