Union City, Tenn.-The Union City School System weekly sports schedule is highlighted this week by the Tornadoes’ participation in the state football playoffs and the boys’ cross country squad and Katelyn Edmond being involved in the state meet.
UC (5-5) will host Douglass (4-6) of Memphis, an opponent they faced last year in Round 2 when the Twisters won their fourth state title in nine years. Union City won that shootout in 2017, 44-30.
A victory Friday would propel the Purple and Gold into Round 2 next week, when they would either travel to Memphis to play Fairley or host Gibson County.
The UC boys’ cross country team will make their second straight trip to the state cross country meet Saturday, with Edmond representing the Lady Tornado squad as an individual.
The meet is held annually at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, with the Small Division School race to begin at 10 a.m.
The UC Middle School basketball teams will play three times this week – twice at home on Tuesday and Thursday.

Band gearing up
For Grand Nationals
The Union City High School band had a “good performance” in the Contest of Champions competition in Murfreesboro Saturday, according to director Jason Deem, and will now turn its sights to the Grand National Championships in Indianapolis, Nov. 9.
“Some of the best bands in the region were there (Murfreesboro) and we played in a higher classification (Class 3A) because of travel logistics,” Deem said. “I thought we did well.”
Union City will take the field at 4:15 p.m. local time (5:15 Indianapolis time) at the GNC competition.
