Union City, Tenn.–Employees from both Atmos Energy and the Union City School System Maintenance Department worked late into the night Monday and UC School System personnel and Revell Construction were back at it bright and early this morning to repair a gas leak at Union City Elementary School.
Classes were canceled today at UCES as a safety precaution by Director of Schools Wes Kennedy.
“First and foremost, our top priority and main concern is the well-being of our students and faculty,” Kennedy said this morning. “We’re addressing the issue and will get it resolved before anyone is allowed back on campus.”
Both students’ families and UCES faculty were notified of the issue and the cancellation of today’s classes by the school system’s all-call format Monday night.
The leak was discovered Monday evening after a suspicious smell was reported on the west end of the Union City Elementary School campus.
Kennedy said any decision on classes for Wednesday will be made later today or this evening.
Union City Elementary School faculty – including educational assistants – gathered this morning at the Purple and Gold room on the high school campus for a day of in-service.
Classes at both Union City Middle and UC High School operated on schedule at their respective campuses today.
