Discovery Park Hosts Earth Science Week

UNION CITY, TN-    Discovery Park of America is participating in Earth Science Week 2018 from October 16th through October 20th.  The American Geosciences Institute has organized this national and international event since 1998.  Its purpose is to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for the Earth sciences and to encourage stewardship of the Earth.  This year’s celebration theme is “Earth as Inspiration.”  The event will emphasize artistic expression as a unique, powerful opportunity for geoscience education and understanding in the 21st century.
The activities and resources at Discovery Park of America will engage young people and others in exploring the relationship between the arts and the Earth systems.  The schedule of activities, classes and events at Discovery Park of America are all free for members or anyone with park admission.  These are the plans:

  • Tuesday, October 16-
    • 11:00 am – 12 pm- Magnets (Art Hallway)
    • 3:00 – 5:00 pm- UTM Student Meteorological Society Demonstration
  • Wednesday, October 17-
    • 3:00 – 4:00 pm- The real Story of the Oviraptor (Dino Hall)
    • 3:00 – 5:00 pm- Fossil digging sponsored by UTM Geology Dept. (Great Lawn)
  • Thursday, October 18-
    • 3:00 – 5:00 pm- Explore stream health with the UTM Ecology Club (Children’s Garden)
  • Friday, October 19-
    • 12:00 – 2:00 pm- Explore the Earth’s structure (Art Hallway)
  • Saturday, October 20-
    • 11:00 am – 1:00 pm- Bring your own artifact and let archeologist Bill Lawrence identify it. You can also enjoy seeing some amazing artifacts brought by Bill Lawrence and the UTM Geology Department.  (Dino Hall)
    • 2:00 – 4:00 pm Fossil Dig (Great Lawn)

According to Andrew Gibson, most of the programs offered at Discovery Park during Earth Science Week are appropriate for an audience of all ages.  “We hope that our members and guests will enjoy these unique activities and this opportunity to learn more about the planet we live on during Earth Science Week,” Gibson added.
