Green Encourages Young Voters: "Every Vote Counts"

By Shannon McFarlin WENK/WTPR News Director
Paris, Tenn.—At an assembly with Henry County High School Seniors, County Elections Commission Administrator DeLaina Green strongly encouraged the students to make a lifelong habit of voting and to encourage others to do so. “Every vote counts. Every vote matters,” Green said.

Green and volunteers from her office were at the high school to register the young people to vote and to answer their questions on the process.

Across the nation, a push is on this week to register as many people as possible to vote, especially in Tennessee where Green pointed out, “Our state is ranked 49th in voter participation. Which means we’re right at the very bottom. And Tennessee is trying to determine why that is.”

Green said it was important for the young people to vote and to encourage their parents to do so, if they do not already. She noted that the seniors will be entering the job force soon, if they haven’t already, and matters such as wages, taxes, and health care will become very important to them.

“You can look at the big picture or the small picture,” she said, “but you want to decide how your tax dollars are spent” and a big part of that is the opportunity to vote on the candidates who are making the important decisions for the citizenry.

She reminded everyone that the next election is the midterm and general election on November 6.
