Day In The Park Event, Clean-Up, Neighborhood Watch Discussed At A-P Meeting

Paris, Tenn.—There’s a lot going on in the Atkins-Porter Neighborhood in Paris, from a planned Day in the Park, a community-wide Clean-Up this Saturday and the beginnings of a Neighborhood Watch. All of that was discussed at Tuesday night’s busy meeting of the Historic Atkins-Porter Neighborhood Association.

The Day In The Park will be held at the Atkins-Porter Recreation Center at the corner of Highland and Walnut Streets from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, October 13, and will include an arts and crafts market, pumpkin patch, police dog demonstrations, and Touch-A-Truck with vehicles from the local police departments, fire department, Air Evac and more.

The Henry Co. Sheriff’s Office will be grilling hot dogs and there will be chips, cookies and soft drinks, too. It is a free event for the community.

The Preserve Paris Clean-Up in the Atkins-Porter Neighborhood will be held this Saturday morning, September 22. Everyone is to meet at 9 a.m. at the A-P Recreation Center and divide into groups. City officials also will be on hand to help with the clean-up, which will be in the alleys this time.

Jack Spencer was appointed to head up the Neighborhood Watch, which has been discussed at length at prior meetings. Member River Byrd noted, “We’ve talked about forming one before and a lot of people say they want it, but no one wants to help.”

Spencer said he would be willing to help organize it. “I think it will be a simple thing, really,” he said. “We just need one or two people on each street to be captains and by that I mean just to be the eyes and ears for those streets. If we see something suspicious, we don’t need to confront anybody. We just need to call the Paris Police.”

Signs will be distributed to be placed in the A-P Neighborhood and in people’s cars so that others know there is a Neighborhood Watch in place.
