Paris, Tenn.—A Clarksville man is in the Weakley County Detention Center after leading deputies on a high speed chase which began in southern Weakley County and ended in Henry County.

Montez Johnson, age 31, was arrested on numerous charges including aggravated assault on an officer, evading arrest and possession of a quarter pound of marijuana and Ecstacy.

According to Weakley County Sheriff’s Captain Randall McGowan, Deputy Chris Crocker clocked Johnson’s 2001 silver Mercedes going 74 mph in a 55 mph zone on Hwy. 54 between Dresden and Como.

Johnson tried to hide from the officer by pulling into the parking lot of the Hilltop Bar on Hwy. 54. At that time, Deputy Crocker approached the car and smelled marijuana coming from it and told Johnson to exit the vehicle.

After a short confrontation in which Johnson reportedly grabbed the deputy, Johnson sped off toward Paris. Crocker was following with lights and sirens and the Weakley County dispatch notified Henry County they were coming into the county.

Henry County deputies set up spike strips on Hwy. 54 near the Paris city limits, but Johnson turned onto Trading Post Rd. and then onto Old Dresden Highway, which is now a dead-end road.

At the end of the road, Johnson hit a culvert and crashed into a ditch.

Johnson got out of his car and was attempting to get something from his trunk when deputies apprehended him. An empty holster was found in the trunk.

McGowan said Johnson hit his head on the windshield during the crash and was transported to Henry County Medical Center for treatment.

Inside his car, deputies found a quarter pound of marijuana, Ecstacy pills, and $982 in cash. McGowan said he is charged with aggravated assault on an officer, evading arrest, tampering with evidence for throwing items out of the car window while fleeing, possession of marijuana with intent to resale and possession of Ecstacy with intent to resale and speeding.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol investigated the accident. Further charges may be filed by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.
