Union City High School Class Again Comes To Aid Of Band Show Friday

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–Coby Watts’ Structural Systems 2 class was ready, willing and able when called upon.

For the second straight year, Union City High School Band Director Jason Deem needed help with backdrops and props for his group’s annual show.

He contacted his fellow UC School System teacher and Watts and his CTE students have capably helped out with detailed woodworking as part of their daily classes. They are on schedule to have the project completed well ahead of Saturday when the award-winning Tornado band will perform this year’s show “The Pale Horse ‑ for the first time in exhibition at its own competition at War Memorial Stadium.

“Jason came to me and told me what he needed and asked if we could help and I told him ‘absolutely,’” Watts said of his students’ involvement. “That’s what we do here – if somebody has a need, somebody in the system steps up and helps them out.”

The SS 2 class built the bases for the backdrops as well, then began the detailed task of matching the props with the color guard uniforms.

“Our students have enjoyed the challenge,” Watts said. “They have been challenged by the design, but you can tell they’ve taken great pride in getting it done.”

For his part, Deem is grateful to have a capable “teammate” like Watts who is willing to help.

“What we asked Coby to do was not easy. But he and his class were eager to do what we needed done and they’ve done a great job,” said Deem, who’ll host the 34th annual Union City Band Invitational Saturday. “I know it’s good experience for his kids because it’s more-advanced woodworking.

“It’s really good to have people in your system who are supportive and are willing to help whenever you have a need. It really is good teamwork.”

It’s truly the Union City School System way.
