Weakley County, Tenn.—Deputies from the Weakley Co. Sheriff’s Office arrested two men after they were caught trying to steal hemp plants from a hemp farm in southern Weakley Co. Monday evening.
Sheriff’s Captain Randall McGowan said the manager of the hemp farm told deputies that people are constantly trying to steal the hemp, thinking it is marijuana. He said there have been instances in which people trying to steal the hemp have fired gunshots over the workers’ heads at the farm.
McGowan said, “The Weakley Co. Sheriff’s Department wants people to know that even though it looks like marijuana, the hemp contains far less THC than marijuana and that hemp cannot make someone high.”
The two had already cut down over a thousand dollars’ worth of hemp when they were caught.
Arrested were Axel Javier Rivera, age 20, of Sharon; and Kaelin Dewayne Willis, age 22, of Camden. Willis already had active warrants on him and those were served, too. They are charged with criminal trespass, theft over $1,000, vandalism and simple possession of marijuana.
