Paris, Tenn.—The Rhea School construction project should be totally finished by the end of September, if not before, according to Paris Special Schools District (PSSD) Maintenance Supervisor Jason Coffield.
Coffield told the board at its regular meeting Tuesday night, “Believe it or not we’re finishing up. We have a deadline of Sept. 21 to get everything moved (building materials being stored on the site),” he said. “We’re down to the fine details and everything should be out of here by the end of the month.”
On recommendation of Director of Schools Dr. Norma Gerrell, budget amendments were approved for the construction project.
Business Manager Mandy Hudgins explained in a memo, the board had originally budgeted at the end of July to move an additional $250,000 to the construction project fund. ’Since the budget, we have approved and completed several items that will require additional dollars,’ she said. “We are increasing the amount to be budgeted from fund balance for the construction project from $250,000 to $415,000. This amount is still well within the range we needed to stay at for this project.
The additional amount also will include roof repairs on a wing of Rhea School. Coffield said the repairs are needed because nails that were placed on the roof some 12 years ago are “backing out of the decking through the shingles.”
In other business,
–Board President Richard Edwards reported that Gerrell received a ‘very good’ evaluation from the board, especially for a superintendent after one year. She rated an average 4.3 in a 1-5 scale, he said. There were 45 questions on the evaluation sheet that was filled out by board members.
–The board approved a contract with Attorney Michael King to serve as additional legal counsel for the board if needed. King specializes in school board representation and currently works with several other school boards in the area.
