Dr. Duane Bolin To Participate In Community Panel On Democracy, Informed Citizens

Paducah, Ky.–A retired Murray State University History Professor will be a panelist at a “Democracy and the Informed Citizen” program set for Tuesday night in Paducah. Dr. Duane Bolin of Murray will join other scholars in leading a community discussion about journalism and politics.
It has been said that an educated citizenry is a vital requisite for our survival as a free people. And indeed, any ruling government that is “of the people” must have as its foundation a constituency who is aware and informed, prepared to make educated decisions based on the truth of any matter. And now, more than ever, it is imperative that our nation is informed, discerning truth from falsehood, using all the information at hand as a basis for action.
In pursuit of this cause, the Kentucky Humanities Council presents Democracy and the Informed Citizen, a series of presentations in five Kentucky cities. On Tuesday, September 18th, the program comes to Paducah with a visit to the Market House Theatre. That night, there will be a “cuttings” read of the play All The King’s Men featuring local personalities. Following the play reading, a panel including Judge Thomas B. Russel, journalist Steve Wilson, and scholar Dr. Duane Bolin will lead a community discussion about journalism and politics. The conversation will be moderated by newspaper columnist Constance Alexander.
“Being an informed citizen takes on varying forms, from being engaged with your community to identifying what constitutes a credible source to understanding context surrounding today’s issues,” said Esther Mackintosh, Federation of State Humanities Councils President. “The councils are uniquely and ideally suited to offer programs exploring this topic because they not only have a deep understanding of the characters and concerns of their state, but also a distinguished record in using the humanities to bring people together to explore difficult topics.”
The Kentucky Humanities Council encourages you to take a step forward into the conversation, discovering more about being an informed citizen in a time when being one is becoming increasingly complex. It is through such engagement that the Council hopes that we will continue to move toward that more perfect union.
