Union City-New Jersey Football Game Change Announced

By Mike Hutchens, UC Schools Communications Director

Union City, Tenn.–There’s been another change with Union City’s 2018 football schedule.

Having finally agreed to play Penns Grove (Carneys Point, New Jersey) High School on Saturday, Sept. 22, the Golden Tornadoes will now play the school’s Red Devils on Friday, Sept. 21, instead.

The contest is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. local time.

Penns Grove initiated conversations for the change.

The Red Devils, who are 2-0 on the young season, have no lights on their homefield and usually play their home games on Saturdays.

Occasionally, the school brings in portable lights and had scheduled to do so this week with a home game against Paulsboro.

However, expected inclement weather has Penns Grove electing to play this week on Saturday.

The school still has a commitment to bring in lights and contacted UC school officials to see if a Friday game next week was a possibility.

With the chance to keep his team on its usual Friday night schedule, Tornado head coach Darren Bowling agreed.

The Union City travel party will still leave late Tuesday night (Sept. 18) via charter. The team will practice at PGHS on Wednesday afternoon.

Plans are for the group to travel to New York City Thursday to visit the 9/11 Memorial and possibly Times Square.

Some sightseeing in Philadelphia is still on the agenda for Friday morning before the game that night.

The new itinerary will have Union City returning home Saturday morning.
