Fall Sports Roundup: UC Golfers Triumph, Softball Team Wins

Tornado golfers triumph
In own tournament
 
The Union City High School boys’ golf team won its own tournament Thursday, edging Henry County in a one-hole playoff to capture first place in the Union City Invitational at Poplar Meadows Country Club.
 
Both UC and HC finished regulation with 337 scores before the Tornadoes claimed first place.
 
A birdie on the extra hole by Joyner Caldwell, pars by Tyler Walton and Kyle Herrell and a bogey by Wilson Harris netted the title for UC.
 
Six boys’ teams in all participated.
 
Tyler Walton claimed runner-up individual honors via a playoff for the Purple and Gold after firing a 75 to lead the Twisters.
 
Herrell shot 85, Carter Walton 86, Caldwell a 91 and Harris a 97.
 
Also playing for Union City was Miles Odle (103), Mason Reed (104), Gabriel Qualls (106) and Eli Jordan (113).
 
In the girls’ portion of the event, the Lady Tornadoes finished second behind Henry County, 159-211.
 
Gussie Parks had UC’s best score, a 100, while Meg Kizer shot 111.
 
Other scores for the Lady Twisters included Addi Hooks (114), Olivia Tanner (121), Julianne Becton (122), Abbi Nicks (122) and Sloan Bearden (129).
 
Union City’s next match is Tuesday at home against Dresden.
 
UCMS softball wins
Against So. Fulton
 
Lainey Barker scored four runs and Emmaline Qualls drove in three to lead Union City to a 15-6 middle school softball victory over South Fulton Thursday.
 
Emma Powell had a pair of hits and an RBI for the Lady Tornadoes, who improved to 4-2.
 
Powell fanned three and was credited with the pitching victory.
 
Sixth-grader Edie Rodgers came on in relief in the third inning and did not allow a run the rest of the way.
 
Union City plays Saturday in the Martin Invitational, its first two games scheduled at 9 and 11:40 a.m., respectively. Elimination games are set to start at 3 p.m.
 
Jr. Twisters’ effort good
In loss to Paris Inman
 
Despite falling to 0-4, the Union City Middle School football team had some positives in a 32-14 loss to Paris Inman Thursday night at War Memorial Stadium.
 
Jacob Arnold ran for 128 yards, including a 50-yard touchdown scamper in the fourth quarter. Durell Littleton had a 33-yard TD dash in the opening period and also tacked on a two-point conversion following Arnold’s score.
 
Littleton finished with 49 yards on the ground.
 
Miguel Sanchez Cruz topped the tackle chart for UC with five stops. Gage Smith was in on three hits, while Taylor Baker recorded a pair of tackles.
 
Union City plays at Huntingdon next Thursday.
 
Volleyball splits matches
At Carlisle County
 
Union City took the jayvee match-up at Carlisle County, 2-0, but fell to the Lady Comets 3-1 in varsity volleyball play Thursday night.
 
The junior varsity won 21-15 and 21-9.
 
Aubree Keeling turned in a stellar defensive effort and had 18 sets for hits for UC. Erin Oatsvall recorded eight services points and nine set hits while Marlee Johnson, Sara Ullrich and Chloe Pritchard all were lauded for their defensive play by head coach Jodi Powell.
 
In the varsity match, UC won Game 2, 25-16, but fell 25-14, 25-15 and 25-19 in the other three games.
 
Defensive specialists Sydney Johnson, Leah Beth Faulkner and Aleigha Beth Keeling all had over 20 passes each for the Lady Tornadoes.
 
Ashley Kate Cooley, Aubree Keeling and Samantha George provided numerous settings and Sailor Bearden had 14 saves. Cooley added 13 and Endia Dowell chipped in with eight.
 
Now 6-4 on the season, Union City will play at home three times next week, beginning with a Monday match against Trenton.
 
Three UC sports programs
To benefit from golf event
 
The girls’ basketball, softball and baseball teams at Union City High School will benefit from the Zaxby’s Union City High School Golf Scramble, Saturday, Sept. 15, at Wynridge Golf Club in Troy.
 
Registration for the four-person tourney is slated for 7:30 a.m. on the day of the tournament, with the shotgun start scheduled for 8:30.
 
Entry fee is $60 per person and includes lunch and door prizes.
