Sevierville, Tenn.—A former Palmersville man who served in the U.S. Army with Elvis Presley has died.
Rex Mansfield, age 83, died Sunday in Sevierville. He served in the Army with Presley and they became close friends. Mansfield was inducted into the Army on the same day as Elvis in March 1958 and they went through basic training together in Texas and then both served in Germany.
After the Army service, Elvis asked Mansfield to work for him, but he declined the offer. Mansfield’s wife Elisabeth, was Elvis’ secretary in Germany.
Mansfield and Elisabeth shared their memories of Elvis during Elvis Week this year at the Elvis Fan Club event at Graceland. You can read stories about their friendship in three books, “Elvis The Soldier”, “Sergeant Presley: Our Untold Story of Elvis’ Missing Years” and “Living The Moments: My Life With Elvis, Elisabeth and Jesus”.
Mansfield is survived by his wife, his son, Don Mansfield and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was a published author and former coordinator for Operation Christmas Child.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Jude, First Baptist Church TV Ministry and Samaritan’s Purse.
The funeral service was held Tuesday night at Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville, with interment today in Pigeon Forge with military honors.
