UCMS softball squares mark
With thumping of Lake Co.

Union City was simply in a different league than Lake County in middle school softball Monday.

The Lady Tornadoes romped to a 21-1 blowout in three innings over LC to even their record at 2-2.

While UC scored the majority of its runs on walks and wild pitches, several jayvee players had highlights in the romp.

Aujani Moss drove in a pair of tallies with a hard-hit ball, while sixth-grader Katana Bonds singled in a run.

Edie Rogers got credit for the pitching win, with Emma Powell recording the final out of the run-rule contest with a strikeout.

Union City will travel to Dresden today, varsity action set to begin at 5 with a jayvee game to follow.

Tornadoes fall to No. 6
In latest state rankings

A narrow 7-6 loss to Jackson South Side dropped reigning Class 2A state champion Union City to No. 6 in the latest Associated Press prep football rankings, released Monday.

The Tornadoes, now 0-2, were ranked No. 1 in the first poll of the season last week.

South Side (2-0) rose from ninth to No. 6 in Class 4A with the win over UC.

The Twisters were replaced atop the Double-A listing by Meigs County. Columbia Academy is now second.

Union City faces its third ranked foe in as many weeks Friday when longtime rival Trenton Peabody (3rd) visits War Memorial Stadium for an early-season Region 7-2A showdown.
