Dover, Tenn. This weekend, you can walk through a Civil War encampment, interact with soldiers, and learn of life and activities in a military camp similar to what would have been in and around Fort Donelson more than 150 years ago.
Living history interpreters representing the 8th Tennessee Infantry (CSA) will offer public programs on both Saturday and Sunday, August 25-26, at Fort Donelson National Battlefield in Dover.
Members will portray the Confederate soldier of the Army of Tennessee during the Civil War. They will share of historic accounts, demonstrate various activities of camp life, and also demonstrate military drill and tactics. The programs will also include demonstrations of the firing of period weapons.
The original 8th TN Infantry was organized in May 1861. The regiment went to training at Camp Trousdale in Tennessee; troops saw service at Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga, the Atlanta Campaign, Franklin and Nashville.
For both Saturday and Sunday, the camp for the 8th Tennessee Infantry will be open 10:00 am – 3:00 pm, at the log hut, located within the earthen Fort Donelson (Tour Stop #3). Military demonstrations and historic weapons firing will be offered at 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm, and 3:00 pm. All events are free and open to the public.
