Paris, Tenn.—The Paris Special Schools District has reason to celebrate.
Director of Schools Dr. Norma Gerrell told the school board at Tuesday night’s meeting that the PSSD scored the highest scores across the board in the Tennessee Value Added Assessment System.
With 1 being significantly below expectation and five being significantly above expectation, the PSSD scored all fives in every area for the district and for each school in the district.
“This is a big time to celebrate,” Dr. Gerrell said, and Board President Richard Edwards agreed. “Level 5 across the board. That’s just great. Everyone needs to be commended for that.”
At the outset of the session, a reception was held for the new teachers to the district. Each building principal introduced the teachers who will be in their schools to the board.
The new teachers are: Emily Lee, Rhea; Melanie White and Heather Bastyr, both Paris Elementary; Donna Davidson, Cordon Hight, Sarah Anderson, and Lori McClain, 7th grade; Skylar Haley, Emma Massey and Nick Coleman, sixth grade and Carrie Jones, 8th.
The board also was introduced to the new therapy dogs, Buster Crosser and Jack Brewer, and that is covered in a separate article posted earlier.
Gerrell reported on the new policies to be approved, noting that with 31 new laws affecting education in the state, that means 31 new policies. The policies run the gamut of homebound instruction, district water testing, background investigations for contract workers and volunteers, family and medical leave, attendance, codes of conduct, zero tolerance offenses, corporal punishment, medicines, child abuse and neglect and more.
Sherry Wagner reported on the physical therapy services provided by Henry County Medical Center for the district, noting that normally the district has no more than three students who require physical therapy a year.
In other business, the board approved a list of fundraising groups authorized by the board: IMS basketball, football, soccer, and softball boosters, IMS chorus and strings steering committees, BETA club and IMS band steering committee, along with the Rhea PTO, Paris Elementary PTO and Inman Middle PAC. Each booster club or steering committee is authorized to conduct four fundraisers a year.
