Humphreys County, Tenn.—The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has confirmed the identity of the Carroll County man who drowned Sunday while canoeing on the Buffalo River.
According to TWRA officials, the victim is Roger Balentine. Balentine and his girlfriend were canoeing when they initially became stuck in a sunken treetop.
As WENK/WTPR reported earlier, the victim drowned when he was attempting to retrieve items that had fallen from the canoe when it overturned. He did not resurface. Balentine was not wearing a life jacket.
His girlfriend was not injured in the incident.
The incident occurred on the Buffalo River near the Humphreys-Perry County line. Rescue squads were called to a farm on Seed Tick Road Sunday afternoon on a report that a man had gone missing while canoeing.
Rescue squads from both Perry and Humphreys Counties, along with deputies from both counties, assisted in the search and recovery.
