Mayfield, Ky.—Graves County Sheriff Dewayne Redmon has been indicted by the Graves County Grand Jury, charged with first degree possession of a controlled substance and official misconduct.
According to the indictment, Redmon took controlled substances from the drug drop box at the jail with the intent to keep some for his personal use. According to the indictment this happened on or before July 18. Redmon allegedly was in possession of hydrocodone.
The drug drop box is supposed to be for the public to drop off unused or unwanted medications to be destroyed.
Circuit Court Judge Tim Starks recused himself from the case and Christian Court Judge John Atkins has been named to hear it.
The Kentucky State Police earlier had announced it was launching an investigation of Redmon after receiving a tip.
Earlier, the sheriff’s attorney, Bryan Wilson said the sheriff had battled a variety of health issues for which he sought treatment and would be taking a leave of absence.
Wilson released a statement after the indictment was announced:
“This morning we learned that Sheriff Redmon had been indicted on one felony count and one misdemeanor count following the meeting of the Graves County Grand Jury on Thursday. Sheriff Redmon is appreciative of the work performed by the grand jury. From the beginning, the sheriff has been cooperative with the investigation into his alleged conduct. He will continue to be cooperative and we will work openly with the special prosecutor to resolve this matter in a manner that is fair both to the sheriff and the citizens of Graves County.”
