Union City Schools Fall Sports Round Up: Golf, Volleyball, Cross Country

The Union City High School volleyball team won for the second time in as many matches, beating Fulton City 3-1 Tuesday night.
 
The Lady Tornado jayvee team was also victorious over the Bulldog girls, 2-0.
 
In varsity play, UC won games 3 and 4, 25-20 and 25-14, respectively, after the two teams split the first two close games. Union City won Game 1, 25-21, and Fulton City Game 2, 25-22.
 
Endia Dowell and Ashley Kate Cooley had big stat lines for the victorious Lady Twisters, Dowell registering 37 assists, 26 serves and 15 hits. Cooley had 54 assists and 21 serves.
 
Samantha George was solid in a defensive role with 25 passes to assist and Sailor Bearden had 17 assists, 16 serves and 15 hits.
 
The jayvee match saw UC sweep Fulton City, 25-7 and 25-22.
 
Aubree Keeling had 25 sets to assist hitters, while teammate Anny Lynn Cheatham had nine serves and six hits.
 
Kaigan Davis contributed to the winning cause with nine serves, four hits and numerous passes.
 
Thursday’s scheduled match with Carlisle County has been postponed, meaning Union City’s next outing will be Monday night at Lake County.
 
UCHS runners open season
With promising showing
 
The Union City High School cross country teams participated in a meet Tuesday afternoon at Dresden, both turning in good performances.
 
The Tornado boys were seventh out of 17 teams, while the girls placed 10th in a field that included the same number of entries.
 
Dalton Bone finished with a time of 19:42 to place 19th individually for UC. BJ Frankum came in 22nd at 20:11, while Matthew Parr ended up in 28th after being clocked at 20:34.
 
There were 133 total individuals to compete on the boys’ side.
 
In the girls’ competition, Union City’s best finisher was Katelyn Edmond, who was 48th out of 97 runners with a time of 29:28.
 
The Twister teams will run again next Tuesday, at Atwood, vs. West Carroll.
 
UC girl linksters
Top Gibson County
 
Union City’s girls’ golf team picked up its first win of the fall, beating Gibson County (105-129) in play Tuesday afternoon at Dyer.
 
Meg Kizer’s 56 earned her medalist honors for the Lady Tornadoes. Sloan Bearden shot 59, Gussie Parks registered a 60 and Julianne Becton came in with a 69.
 
Madison Hart’s 63 represented GC’s best score.
 
The UC boys and GC finished in a dead heat, each shooting 187.
 
Tyler Walton shot 41, while teammate Mason Reed came in with a 45. Miles Odle carded a 48 for the Twisters, with Wilson Harris shooting 53 and Gabriel Qualls coming in with a 59.
 
Trenton also competed, but did not have enough players to place in the team competition.
 
Union City will be back on the links Thursday at the Weakley County Country Club against Dresden.
 
UCMS softball game
Washed out Tuesday
 
Union City’s middle school softball game against visiting Henry County was rained out Tuesday.
 
No make-up date has been set.
 
UCMS hits the road Monday and Tuesday of next week with games at Dresden and Paris Inman, respectively.
