Paris, Tenn.—Much progress is being made at the Atkins-Porter Community Park on Jackson Street in Paris, with the construction of the pavilion which will serve as the heart of the park.

The pavilion was recently completed and Park Chairman River Byrd said gutters will be placed on it this week, followed by electrical wiring receptacles and a ceiling fan.

The Historic Atkins-Porter Neighborhood Association has been planning the park since last year and has received a grant from the USDA for its construction. The first major step in the project was the demolition of a home on that lot which had become an eyesore and public nuisance for local police and the neighbourhood.

The Atkins-Porter Association owns the property, which is at 311 Jackson Street.

Plans are for the park to include bricked walk ways, a signboard, trees, and benches.

Byrd said pavers will be installed the first week of September with fencing around the park to follow. The park should be ready for the public by Christmas, he said.

The Atkins-Porter Association provided a match for the USDA grant.

When completed, the park will be open to everyone.
