Paris Karate Students Raise $1,495 For St. Jude

Paris, Tenn.—The kids at Paris Karate have done it again! They raised a total $1,495 this year for St. Jude Children’s Hospital during their annual fundraiser.

They call it a “Kata Thon” and it’s a week-long event each year. This year’s theme was “Children Helping Children”.

Paris Karate Director Rick Conger said students who participated in the fundraiser again decided the funds should be directed to St. Jude. “It helps the children at St. Jude while also benefiting the kids at Paris Karate by practicing their karate skills,” Conger said.

Each student performs a ‘kata’, which are the preset routines of karate techniques. Sponsors donate money for each kata performed.

This year, Conger said, 506 kata were performed in class and 397 outside class with 109 students participating. Gail Ellis, who is an advanced green belt, did the most, doing 300 kata at home.
