Paris, Tenn.—Political newcomer Bruce Griffey solidly defeated long-time State Representative Tim Wirgau for the Republican nomination and tonight said his victory is “very humbling”. Griffey will face Democrat Richard Carl in November.
Griffey told WENK/WTPR, “I’m excited to work for the folks in Henry Co. who I feel have been forgotten or marginalized. I’m going to fight for the little guy and fight for good paying jobs” in the 75th District, which represents Henry, Benton and Stewart Counties.
Griffey easily won the nomination in all three counties and it was clear from the first early voting results that were released.
In Henry Co., Griffey won by a vote of 3,039-2,393. In Stewart County, results were 1,539 for Griffey with 1,092 for Wirgau; and in Benton County, the vote was 1,802 for Griffey, with 1,062 for Wirgau.
Wirgau called Griffey to concede the election around 9 p.m.
