Big Sandy, Tenn.—The Berry Farm in Benton County has been accepted into the Tennessee Century Farms program.
The Berry Farm was founded in 1901 by Sidney Terrell Berry and Nancy Helen Bush Berry.
Located southeast of Big Sandy in Benton County, the farm produced tobacco, wheat, corn, sheep, and hogs. Sidney Berry had a curing barn on the farm, and he also owned and operated a country store. Shortly after Sidney died in 1912, his youngest son, Lawson C. Berry, married Polly Brewer (the couple is shown below). They worked the farm and operated the store. In 1918, Lawson purchased a grist mill from Sears and Roebuck. His youngest son, LeJune Berry, who is the current owner of the farm, still uses the 100-year-old grist mill to make corn meal. He and his wife, Marie Lowrey Berry, have enrolled the farm in the Conservation Reserve Program.
