Two Opportunities For Free Canoeing/Kayaking

 
 
Springville, Tenn.–The Friends of Tennessee and Cross Creeks National Wildlife Refuge is inviting the public for two different opportunities for a free Canoeing and Kayaking event held on successive weekends at two different locations. Limited space is available, to reserve your spot please RSVP by calling the refuge office at 731-642-2091.
 
On Saturday, July 14th at Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge from 9 am to 12 pm, a guided ranger paddle will be offered on Grassy Lake in the Duck River Bottoms area of the refuge located in Humphreys County. Packed with wildlife and interesting features, this large impoundment is a favorite with small boaters due to its natural beauty. Birds are plentiful in this area including Osprey, Great Blue Herons, Egrets, Green Herons and the occasional bald eagle. A limited number of free canoes and kayaks will be available, along with paddles and adult life preservers. No prior experience is necessary, but participants need to be prepared for sun exposure and wear shoes that can get wet. Please bring water, sun screen and wear a hat. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Participants may also bring their own equipment. All participants are asked to meet at the entrance gate at 550 Refuge Lane in New Johnsonville at 9 am.
 
A second chance to explore a refuge by canoe or kayak will be held in the Elk Reservoir at Cross Creeks National Wildlife Refuge in Dover, TN on Saturday, July 21st from 9 am to 12 pm. Nestled in the hills that line the Cumberland River, this area of the refuge abounds with wildlife, peace and tranquility! Once again, a limited number of free canoes and kayaks will be available, along with paddles and adult life preservers. No prior experience is necessary, but participants need to be prepared for sun exposure and wear shoes that can get wet. Please bring water, sun screen and wear a hat. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Participants may also bring their own equipment. All participants are asked to meet at the refuge office and Visitor Center located at 643 Wildlife Road in Dover, TN at 9:00 am.
