Paris, Tenn.—Firefighters from Como/Ore Springs and Cottage Grove Volunteer Fire Departments were helped at the scene of Wednesday’s house fire by neighbors who were worried about the firemen working in the extreme heat. Neighbors of the home at 2040 Briarpatch Lake Road brought water for the firefighters, who were battling the 115 degree heat index as well as the fire. As WENK/WTPR reported Thursday, the home was destroyed after a gas grill was left unattended while the homeowner was grilling on the back porch. Como/Ore Springs Chief Michael Surratt thanked all the firefighters from his department and mutual aid from the Cottage Grove department. “I was really proud that so many of our firemen showed up. It was brutal out there in the heat of the day. With that many men, we could take some breaks and that helped a lot.” Firefighters also thanked the neighbors who brought water for them while at the scene. (Justin Miller photo).
