Union City, Tenn.—A Union City man will appear in court Thursday on a theft charge after he allegedly stole money from a collection jar for a cancer patient.
Michael Glenn Thompson, age 25, of N. 5th St., was charged by Union City Police with a misdemeanor citation for theft of under $1,000.
Thompson is charged with stealing a can full of coins intended for a cancer patient. The can was on the counter at the Oya House restaurant on West Reelfoot Ave.
Upon arrival at the restaurant, police were informed that a white male about 5’8” tall came in to the restaurant and grabbed the coin can and then ran out the door. The witness at the restaurant said he got in a silver car and took off toward town. Another witness took a photo of the vehicle and got the tag number.
Ptl. Scott Watkins found the vehicle minutes after the call and stopped it around the 1500 block of West Main. Thompson was the passenger and according to the police report, admitted taking the money.
An unknown amount of money was in the jar, but Thompson lost the jar and some of the coins. He had $12.61 on his person when he was arrested.
