Paris, Tenn.—A Paris man is in the Henry County Jail on $100,000 bond after leading police on a chase which went from East Wood Street in Paris to Howell’s Resort in the lake area. In the process, he allegedly struck one Paris Police cruiser and two Henry County sheriff’s cruisers. At the end of the pursuit, the man then crashed into an unoccupied mobile home.
Nathan Dewalt III, age 30, of 1310 E. Wood St., is charged with three counts of aggravated assault, evading arrest, leaving the scene, reckless driving, DUI and possession of a controlled substance.
According to the Paris Police report, the incident began around 1 a.m. Monday when Patrolman Daniel Andres spotted Dewalt driving with expired tags. Dewalt stopped for Andres on East Wood Street and Andres said he could see Dewalt reaching into the center console of the vehicle and could smell the odor of marijuana.
When Andres asked permission to search the vehicle, Dewalt reportedly said no because he didn’t have a warrant.
Lt. Josh Frey, Sgt. Jamie James and K9 Drago arrived at the scene and Dewalt reportedly refused to leave the vehicle, but did turn off the car when police asked him to do that.
According to the report, Dewalt again refused to exit the vehicle, started the car and accelerated, hitting James’ cruiser in the process.
During the pursuit down East Wood St., Andres said he saw Dewalt throw something out the window and Frey stopped his cruiser and picked up the package, which was a baggie of marijuana.
While in pursuit, police deployed spike strips and Dewalt’s tire struck the strips as the pursuit moved onto Hwy. 79N. According to the report, Dewalt struck two sheriff’s department cruisers belonging to Deputy Frankie Scott and Deputy John Andrews, who had joined the pursuit.
The chase finally ended at Howell’s Resort where Dewalt crashed his vehicle into an unoccupied mobile home.
Sheriff Monte Belew told WENK/WTPR Tuesday morning that neither Scott nor Andrews were injured, but that substantial damage was caused to the cruisers.
