Woman Arrested After Making Threats To Self, Husband, Law Enforcement

Paris, Tenn.—After a stand-off of several hours, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office arrested a Paris woman who had barricaded herself in her home and threatened to kill herself, her husband and any law enforcement officials who showed up at her home.

Deputies were dispatched to 4311 Hwy. 69S on the threats around 6:30 p.m. and deputies made contact by phone with the woman, Josette Mrkota, age 46, of that address. Deputies made several attempts by phone, public address system, and verbal command, but she refused to comply and come out of her home.

According to the press release from the sheriff’s office, a friend and a family member were called to the scene but their attempts to get her to come out of the house were unsuccessful.

The sheriff office’s Special Reaction Team (SRT) was called to the scene and after more refusals from Mrkota to comply, Sheriff Monte Belew and Sgt. Wayne Fuqua deployed pepper spray canisters through the bedroom windows where she had barricaded herself.

Belew continued attempting verbal commands through the broken window, asking Mrkota to come outside when he heard what sounded like a semi-automatic being loaded in the room where Mrkota was.

More pepper spray canisters were deployed through the windows and several more verbal commands were issued and Mrkota finally surrended to deputies and Troopers with the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

According to the press release, a high-point .40 caliber pistol was found on the floor next to the window where Mrkota was located. A small amount of marijuana and three glass pipes were found.

Henry County EMS checked Mrkota’s condition due to the pepper spray canisters being deployed and after she was cleared, she was transported to the jail. She is charged with aggravated assault, possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Deputies were assisted by the THP, EMS, Oakland Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
