Murray Perkins To Be Honored At State FFA Star Tour In Local Area

Paris, TN— With Murray Perkins of the Paris FFA named as one of the five Stars of the Tennessee FFA Association, the local area will be in the spotlight during the fourth annual Tennessee FFA Star Tour this week.

The tour will come to Tosh Farms of Henry and the Tyson plant in Union City.

Paris FFA Advisor Laura Moss said a reception to honor Perkins also will be held on Thursday afternoon, June 14, at the Old Paris 5 & 10 in downtown Paris.

The Tennessee FFA’s five Stars will embark on the Fourth Annual Tennessee FFA Star Tour June 12th-15th. Earlier this year, the Stars were selected to receive the most prestigious awards given in the FFA.
The 2018 Stars are: Star Farmer, Murray Perkins, Paris; Star in Agribusiness, Ben Young, Coffee County; Star in Agricultural Placement, Dillion Givens, McMinn County; Star in Agriscience, Montana Wright, Stewarts Creek; and Star Greenhand, Maggie Dunivan, Lincoln County. Star recognition is awarded to the top students in five areas who best demonstrate superior Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects, a requirement for all FFA members.
The Tennessee FFA Star Tour offers the Stars a platform to share the work from their agricultural projects with supporters across Tennessee. The tour begins in Doyle at the Tennessee FFA Leadership Training Camp, where the Stars will plan their presentation for the week. That evening, Stars will make a presentation before fellow FFA members attending camp.
Day two includes a breakfast with the Tennessee Farm Bureau Federation (TFBF) in Columbia where the Stars will meet several TFBF leaders, as well as the Tennessee Farm Bureau President. Next, they will attend a luncheon at Ellington Agricultural Center and make their presentation to Commissioner of Agriculture Jai Templeton and other Department of Agriculture staff. That evening, the Stars will visit Tosh Farms in Henry.
Day three will be spent in West Tennessee as the Stars tour Tyson in Union City, share at a luncheon with Farm Credit Mid-America in Dresden, and stop at Star Farmer Murray Perkin’s hometown of Paris for a reception in his honor.

The night will conclude with a tour of Hancock Farms in Bumpus Mills. Day four will start with canoeing in Kingston Springs for a fun, relaxing activity. The Stars will then meet with former American Star Farmer and past Tennessee FFA State President, Joe Moore at his farm in Granville to conclude the tour.
The Star Tour is a reward for the four older Stars who have accumulated numerous achievements, put in hard work and have remained committed to their agricultural project throughout their time in high school. The Star Greenhand is a rising high school sophomore selected for her promising start and future potential. Farm Credit Mid-America awards four $1,000 scholarships to the older Stars and one $500 scholarship to the Star Greenhand for their commitment to bettering the future of agriculture.
