Paris, Tenn.–The City of Paris has decided to once again give pick up of bulky items a try.
“I feel there is a need for this service in our community as lots of individuals have no way to get large unwanted items properly disposed of,” said City Manager Kim Foster, “but it’s going to take a great deal of cooperation by our citizens to make this work. I have been trying for several months to figure out how best to initiate this program without causing an even greater problem in the city. We can’t have large items sitting on curbs all around the city waiting on those few days a month when Public Works will be around to pick them up.”
The plan is to designate the second and fourth Fridays of each month as bulk pick up days. If a resident of the City has something they would like to dispose of they should call Public Works at 642-0473 at any time during the month to get their address on the list. They will then be told what day their item(s) will be scheduled for pick up. It will be the responsibility of the resident to have their item(s) on the curb in front of their house by 7:00 a.m. on the day they are scheduled for pick up. The item should not be placed on the curb any earlier than Thursday afternoon, the day before pick up.
Another important requirement for residents is that they don’t mix their brush and leaves in with their bulk items. Brush and leaves go to a different location in the landfill than bulk items and will be picked up separately. “For this program to work we will have to have the cooperation of our residents” said Phillip Jessie, Public Works Director. “We used to have bulk item pick up, but had to discontinue the service when it got to be too difficult to manage. We really need for the public to not put the items out too early and to keep them separated from their brush and leaf piles. We will do our best to educate our residents about the requirements when they call to get on the list.”
Items that will NOT be picked up are tires, any type of hazardous waste, contractor waste and regular household waste. We will also need to pick up appliances separate from other bulk items because they are handled differently at the landfill. Public Works will address this issue as residents call in.
