Hartsville, Ohio—An Ohio man who claimed he dumped his wife’s body in the Tennessee River in Benton County has been arrested and charged with aggravated murder. Benton County law enforcement had searched for his wife for several days in January but her body has never been recovered.
Philip Snider, age 73, of Hartville, Ohio, was arrested Friday at a fast food restaurant in Hartville, which is in northeast Ohio near Canton. The body of his wife, Roberta Snider, age 70, is still missing.
Snider is being held on a bond of $5 M and is being held in the Stark County Jail.
As WENK/WTPR reported previously, Snider had told authorities his wife died while they were on a trip to Graceland in Memphis between January 4 and 6.
Benton County Sheriff Kenny Christopher said at the time that Snider’s story kept changing. At first, he claimed he had given her body to emergency responders in a parking lot. But surveillance videos showed Snider alone.
Snider then told law enforcement that after his wife died, he threw her body into the Tennessee River near Interstate 40.
Christopher said his deputies and the Benton County Rescue Squad spent a considerable amount of time searching along the river and under the bridge, even utilizing the THP helicopter during the search.
Snider told investigators that he wrapped her body in two plastic bags before dumping her. He also said he had driven around with her body in their truck for two days before he dumped her body. Christopher said Snider also had told investigators that he flagged down an ambulance and asked for help and the ambulance drivers took her body away. He said he didn’t know where the ambulance took her so he came home.
