Washington, D.C.—The President of the Animal Rescue Corps is recovering after requiring a blood transfusion after he became seriously ill after the rescue of some 150 animals from a breeding operation in Carroll County two weeks ago.
Scotlund Haisley reportedly became ill a few days after the Operation Noah’s Ark rescue of the animals from a multi-species breeding operation in Atwood on April 8.
ARC Public Information Officer Michael Cunningham confirmed this morning with WENK/WTPR that Haisley became seriously ill from the extreme ammonia levels. Cunning ham said, “Scotlund did require a blood transfusion a few days later when his body wasn’t metabolising it out if his blood.”
Cunningham told us the day of the rescue that the ammonia levels recorded at the scene were among the highest that ARC has ever recorded at a rescue scene.
District Attorney Matt Stowe is reviewing the evidence to determine what the charges and how many will be filed against the property owners. The rescue was conducted with the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office.
Animals of a variety of species—including dogs, puppies, cats, newborn animals, rabbits, geese, chickens, ducks, goats, sheep, chilchillas, ferrets, and alpacas were found without adequate food or water. Several dead animals, including a zebra, were found on the property.
The animals were extremely dirty suffering from infections and infestations, broken bones, extreme matting and respiratory issues—also caused by the same high ammonia levels.
Property Owner Tara Neutzler has said that animals had not yet been fed that morning when ARC and the deputies arrived for the rescue. She has said she will file litigation against ARC and Carroll Co.
ARC is still in need of volunteers to help care for the animals that were seized from the home at its operation center in Lebanon, Tennessee.
