Big Sandy, Tenn.–The Hometown Hero Memorial Fundraiser will be held at the Big Sandy Municipal Park on Saturday, April 21st beginning at 9 am. This event is sponsored by the Big Sandy High School Class of 2006 along with the City of Big Sandy and is in honor of Sonny Melton, one of the victims from the Las Vegas mass shooting last Fall.
The purpose of the Fundraiser is to raise money to renovate the basketball court located at the Big Sandy Municipal Park. Sonny loved to play basketball and was a member and co-captain of the Big Sandy Men’s Basketball Team during his years at Big Sandy. The court will be rebuilt in Sonny’s honor and will display a memorial dedicated to him. Additionally, the State of Tennessee will be matching all funds raised for the basketball court.
Multiple events throughout the day will provide opportunities for everyone to participate and have fun. The Hometown Hero 5K and Fun Run registration begins at 9 am with the Fun Run starting at 10 am and the 5K Run/Walk following at 10:30 am. The Hometown Hero Classic Car Show registration is from 9 am to 11 am. Judging begins at 11 am and the Awards Ceremony follows at 3 pm. Live music will be featured from 11 am to 7 pm. Additional competitions and fun events throughout the day include food, cake auction, inflatable, face painting, Free Throw Shoot, Home Run Derby, Cornhole, and more.
