Fort Donelson To Host National Junior Ranger Day Saturday

 
 
Dover, Tenn. –    Fort Donelson National Battlefield is taking part in “National Junior Ranger Day,” on Saturday, April 14, by hosting some wonderful natural history and water resource programming.  All materials are free, and youth participants will receive a Junior Environmentalist Patch.
The activities will take place at the Fort Heiman Unit of the national park, located near the community of New Concord, in extreme southeast Calloway County, Kentucky.
Maggie Morgan, of the Four Rivers Watershed Watch, will lead a program, “Nature for Water,” beginning at 9 am.  The program will be held near the park unit’s pavilion structure.
This program will focus on recycling and native plants in our environment, both of which improve our water resources, such as Kentucky Lake.
Another activity will allow participants to get their hands dirty by helping place native plantings in the “rain garden”/native plant beds of the site.  There will also be a little sharing of the history of the Fort Heiman.

With units in Kentucky and Tennessee, Fort Donelson National Battlefield commemorates and interprets the early 1862 campaign for Forts Henry, Heiman, and Donelson.  The national park protects the cultural and natural resources, including the historic Dover Hotel, more than three miles of earthworks and fortifications, as well as the Fort Donelson National Cemetery.
