UTM To Host March In Honor Of MLK Assassination

Martin, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee at Martin Civil Rights Conference Planning Committee, along with other campus and community organizations, will host a march in honor of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 6 p.m., April 4, beginning at Martin City Hall.

Participants will march down University Street from Martin City Hall to the UT Martin campus where a memorial rally will be held in Watkins Auditorium of the UT Martin Boling University Center. Attendees are asked to dress in black in honor of the occasion.

“Even in death, Dr. King remains one of our great moral leaders,” said Dr. David Coffey, chair of the UT Martin Department of History and Philosophy and a member of the planning committee. “His struggle for justice and human dignity has inspired millions. His quest for a just, fair, better world is just as relevant today as it was 50 years ago. His hopeful embrace of nonviolent protest still guides us. It is immeasurably important that we keep his dream alive.”
