Inmate Escapes, Taking Vehicle, Drugs, Cash With Him

Dresden, Tenn.—A Weakley County Detention Center inmate escaped from jail early Easter Sunday morning, taking drugs and cash from the evidence room with him. He also took a four-wheeler that was stored at the jail facility.

The inmate had trustee status with the jail and has since been located and taken back to jail.

At 6 a.m., Inmate Clinton Laster left the jail by hot-wiring a four-wheeler that was in the impound lot at the jail.

According to Captain Randall McGowan, Laster wrecked the 4-wheeler a few hundred yards east of the jail on Hwy. 22 and then fled on foot.

The canine unit from the Benton County Sheriff’s Office was called in along with the THP helicopter.  Laster was located by the canine unit in a wooded area not far from the wreck and was taken back into custody around 11 a.m.

McGowan said, “At the wreck site officers discovered evidence bags belonging to the Weakley County Sheriff Department.  A check was made and the door to the evidence room was found unlocked.  There was no sign of forcible entry.  There was an undetermined amount of drugs (meth) and cash missing from the evidence room.  Most of the items have been recovered.”

A complete inventory is being done but it is currently believed the items taken had already been to court and the cases disposed of.

McGowan said the case is still under investigation.

Clinton Laster has been an inmate since June of 2016 and was serving time for meth related charges
