Paris, Tenn.—What do you do when you spot a horse running down East Wood Street in Paris?

The employees of Paris Animal Control were put to the test early this morning and with the help of city police and a trooper from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, were able to corral the horse behind Tom’s Steak House.

Animal Control Officer Mark Mead told WENK/WTPR that the horse “was just running down the middle of the road. It started around where Beasley Antenna is on Hwy. 79 and just kept on running, like I said, just right down the middle of the road and onto East Wood St.”

Five city cops and a THP trooper joined the chase, he said. “We were concerned about public safety and concerned that the horse not get hit. Everybody had their lights flashing,” Mead said.

The horse finally ran behind Tom’s Steak House and Assistant Animal Control Officer Leellen Smothers “walked over and made friends with the horse and just put the rope around his neck. She did a great job.”

By that time, Mead said, the horse seemed ready to get back to his home. Problem is, no one knows where he belongs.

“We had a guy here who thought he knows where he belongs and he put him in a trailer and was taking him to see, but we’re not sure yet,” Mead said around 9:15 a.m.

If you recognize the horse, please call the Paris-Henry County Animal Shelter at 642-5024.
