Big Sandy, Tenn.—After 116 years of service, the Big Sandy United Methodist Church closed its doors on Sunday.
Elders of the church were forced to make the decision because of declining attendance and lack of financial support, according to Ron Lane, who has attended the church all of his life. Lane said his grandfather was one of the founding members in 1902. Lane works at the “Catfish Radio” station in Camden.
Lane said for the past year, the congregation has consisted only of two families. However, he said, the church had a good service Sunday with a fine sermon by Pastor Keith Nation and closing comments by United Methodist District Superintendent Richard Clark.
“May God bless all of the many families and individuals that have been served by the Big Sandy UMC for the past 116 years,” Lane said.
