Union City, Tenn.—Crews from the National Weather Service will be in Obion County today assessing the damage from what is believed to be a tornado touch-down in Union City overnight.

The survey team from the NWS Memphis office will be giving the storm a rating, but weather observers have said it appears the storm may be at least an EF-2 and perhaps an EF-3.

Eleven people were rescued after they were trapped under their mobile homes, which were torn apart during the storm. Several people were injured with broken bones. Obion County EMA Director Danny Jowers said some of the residents were taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital.

Jowers said much of the damage from last night’s storm was northeast of Union City near the Tyson plant. Jowers said the Tyson plant itself was not damaged, but houses in that area were.

Herman Jenkins Motors was hit hard, with the plate glass windows shattered and vehicles parked in the show room damaged.
