Paris, Tenn.—The Henry County Fair will return to its original dates this summer, with the 2018 fair set for the first week of August.

After much discussion of the pros and cons of other dates, the fair board last night set the fair for August 4-11. Key dates for the fair: the pageants should begin August 4, Junior Livestock Day will be August 9, the Tractor Pull will be August 10, and the Demolition Derby will be held August 11.

Last year’s fair was held the last week of August.

Deneicia Gregson of the fair board explained that many reasons went into the decision to return the fair to the first week of August. “First of all, the carnivals that are available are fewer and fewer. A lot of them have gone out of business and it’s really hard to get a carnival for the fall.”

Other reasons: overall participation was higher when the fair was held the first week of August and many crops are more available for display earlier. Additionally, Gregson said, it was felt that an earlier fair would not conflict with kids’ activities at schools.

“We had a lot of discussion about the good points and the bad points of having the fair at different times. We tried having it later—a lot of people said they wanted that—but participation was actually higher when we had it earlier.”
